LA at a Glance
Also in the LA area are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a member of the Western Division of MLB’s American League. The Angels have been based in Angel Stadium of Anaheim since 1966. In 2009, the Angels were AL Western Division champions for the third straight season, but the team only has won one World Series in 2002. The 2012 season marked the 10th straight year in which the Angels franchise had drawn more than 3 million fans in attendance for the regular baseball season.

— Basketball
Los Angeles is a basketball town with three professional teams in residence at the Staples Center.

The Los Angeles Lakers is the city’s NBA team in the Western Conference of the Pacific Division. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA with 16 NBA championships. The franchise began with the 1947 in Minneapolis, where they won five championships. The team relocated to Los Angeles in 1960, and the Lakers made the NBA finals six times in the 1960s, but lost each to the Boston Celtics. After acquiring four-time MVP Wilt Chamberlain, they won their first NBA title in Los Angeles in 1972. In the 1980s, the Lakers won five championships in a nine-year span, including their first-ever against the Celtics in 1985. The Lakers won three consecutive titles between 2000 and 2002, securing the franchise its second “three-peat.” After losing both the 2004 and 2008 NBA Finals, the Lakers won two more championships in 2009 and 2010. The Lakers hold the record for the longest winning streak of any team in American professional sports, and 16 Hall of Famers have played for Los Angeles and four have coached the team. As of 2013, the Lakers are the second most valuable NBA franchise according to Forbes, having an estimated value of $1 billion.

The Los Angeles Clippers are the other NBA team in Los Angeles that also plays in the Pacific Division. Although the team has been around in LA since 1984, the Clippers are the only NBA team in California that has not won a championship despite five trips to the playoffs.

Part of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the Los Angeles Sparks also play at the Staples Center for the league’s Western Conference. The team was founded before the league’s inaugural 1997 season began. In 11 of their 14 years, the Sparks have qualified for the WNBA Playoffs in Los Angeles, and in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and went to the WNBA Finals where they won the title in 2001 and 2002.

— Hockey
Hockey is also a big draw in the Los Angeles area. The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings play at the Staples Center as a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The team was founded in 1966as an NHL expansion franchise and began to play in the 1967 season. After calling The Forum in Inglewood home for 32 years, they moved to the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles to start the 1999–2000 season. The ream has qualified for postseason play in 24 seasons, advancing past the first round 12 times and past the second round twice to win the Western Conference. Their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals was in the 1992–93 season, but they did not win the Stanley Cup Finals until the 2011–12 season with defeat of the New Jersey Devils.

Also in the LA area in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference is the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks has played their home games at the Honda Center in Anaheim after being founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a name based on the 1992 film. The MLS team Club Deportivo Chivas USA also play at The Home Depot Center in Carson. The club became the 11th MLS team when it entered the league in 2004. Chivas USA was intended to be seen as a “little brother” to its parent club C.D. Guadalajara, one of the most widely supported and successful teams in Mexico. Although the team has made it to the quarter finals four times, Chivas USA has yet to win the MLS Cup.

— Football
Los Angeles is the second-largest city and television market in the United States, but no longer has an NFL team; the nearest team is the San Diego Chargers. At one time Los Angeles area had two NFL teams, the Rams and the Raiders. Both left the city in 1995, with the Rams moving to St. Louis and the Raiders heading back to their original home of Oakland. On August 9, 2011, the LA City Council approved plans to build Farmers Field, which will become home to an NFL team in the future through relocation or expansion. The stadium is expected to be completed by 2016.

Los Angeles is, however, home to the two strong football universities, the USC Trojans and the UCLA Bruins, in the NCAA, both of which are Division I teams in the Pacific-12 Conference.
