The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in Southern California, also known as Metropolitan Los Angeles or the Southland, is the 13th largest metropolitan area in the world and the second largest in the United States. The area predominantly consists of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, respectively the first and third most populous in the entire state. The Combined Statistical Area also includes Riverside, San Bernadino and Ventura Counties. The combined Los Angeles metropolitan area is home to 17.7 million people, making it the most populous metropolitan area in the western United States and the largest in area in terms of land in the United States. The metro area at its core has the most densely populated urbanized area in the United States.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY—OVERVIEW
The most populous county in California, the County of Los Angeles, also known as L.A. County is the most populous county in the entire United States and more populous than 42 entire states. The county seat is in Los Angeles. The county is home to 88 incorporated cities, many more unincorporated areas and two offshore islands: San Clemente Island and Santa Catalina Island. The county itself is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined and home to more than one-quarter of all California residents, making it one of the most diverse counties in the country.

ORANGE COUNTY—OVERVIEW
Orange County has its county seat in Santa Ana and is the third most populous county in California. The sixth most populous in the United States, it is the smallest county in area in Southern California. The county is famous for its tourism as the home of Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm as well as several beaches along its more than 40 miles of coastline. It is known for its affluence and political conservatism. Whereas most population centers in the United States are identified by a major city, there is no defined urban center in Orange County, which is mostly suburban, except for some traditionally urban areas at the centers of the older cities in the county.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY—Overview
The name of Riverside County was taken from the city of Riverside, which is the county seat. Riverside County covers a narrow 7,208 square miles in Southern California. Together with San Bernardino County, the area has been dubbed the Inland Empire. The fourth most populous county in California, Riverside County has been among the fastest growing areas of the United States in the past half a century. Geographically, there is mostly desert in the central and eastern portions of the county, and it has a Mediterranean climate in the western portion of the county. Most of Joshua Tree National Park is located in the county.
